Men's Accessories
To become a man for all seasons, you can’t go wrong with these style tips.
THE key word for a man’s wardrobe is functionality. A basic wardrobe is capable of catering to his every need, from work to play, from weekday to weekends.
A well-equipped wardrobe is an essential part of men’s fashion. It is also necessary to make new additions to the wardrobe regularly; my advise is to throw out any piece you haven’t worn in two years.
Gone are the days when men in Malaysia lack of options when it comes to fashion. Nowadays, we have so many choices at our fingertips, and the good news is, there’s more to come.
So, what are the must-haves in a man’s wardrobe?
Certain pieces of clothing have a timeless appeal, and will transcend any season. Here are some must-have items to spruce up your cupboard.
1) White Shirt
The classic white shirt is a versatile piece and a worthy investment. The white shirt can be worn with a suit for a classic formal look, or any dark-coloured trousers to create a contrast. You can also pair the shirt with jeans when you want a semi-formal look. A noteworthy brand is Sacoor Brothers, which originated from Portugal. It even has an in-house seamstress to do alterations.
2) Ties
A tie needs not be confined to a formal suit, you can as easily wear one with a shirt and jeans. For a suit, ties in solid shades are advised since it adds a hint of colour to an otherwise sober-looking ensemble. For printed ties, stick to those with a few stripes or dots. There are ties that are skinny or broad, choose one that suits your frame and for the right occasion.
Boss Hugo Boss and Givenchy have excellent knots for your consideration.
3) Suit
Essential for any Tom, Dick or (Prince) Harry. The right suit can transform any guy into a dapper Casanova.
In the corporate world, a suit is a must, especially if you want to impress the bigwigs. Even if your daily lifestyle does not require a suit, it is handy to have one around. Choose a suit in a classic colour. Black is predominantly a colour that is worn at occasions like weddings, so avoid wearing a black suit for just any occasion. Navy blue and grey are considered more neutral colours and can be worn for most events.
Always, always invest in a suit of good-quality material. Yes, it may be pricey but consider it an investment as a good suit will last you years. How a suit fits is the numero uno factor. Ideally, you should get a suit tailored to your measurements. However, you can get good pieces off the rack, but don’t forget to ask for alterations so that the suit fits you like a dream.
A good brand for suits is Hackett London, a British brand renowned for sartorial sophistication, which made its debut in Malaysia last year.
The most essential must-have in the wardrobe of any man – or woman. When you get a pair of denims, the most important factor is the fit – not too baggy or too tight (unless you want it to be super-skinny). Bold pops of colors are now popular, so guys can have as much fun as the ladies in terms of being adventurous with the shades. Jeans goes best with a basic white T-shirt, or can be dressed up with a more refined shirt for smart casual days. Pepe Jeans is a cool brand where jeans is concerned.
5) Leather jacket
The leather motorcycle jacket is a timeless essential, and can make any guy look instantly more broody, macho and stylish. James Dean – who also popularise denims thanks to his rebel-with-a-cause image – made this a classic. Goes with jeans, dress slacks and anything in between. For our weather, you can opt for one in faux leather or of thinner material.
Zegna Sport has sporty jackets that ups your X factor effortlessly.
6) Shoes and belt
Ace accessories for every man are footwear and belt. A handsome pair of shoes can make it or break it; some people I know actually make their first impressions based on the shoes a person wears. It is pertinent that scuff marks should be brushed away on a regular basis. And if you choose white shoes, keep them prestine white! (It’s a challenge, I know.) Make sure to polish your shoes regularly and attend to any signs of wear and tear.
A good quality belt does more than just hold up a pair of trousers. One that comes with a striking buckle can make a strong statement.
Black, always the safest shade, works best and it’s versatile too. A black belt can be worn with formal pants, as well as jeans or chinos. The same goes for the shoes. But nowadays, shoes for men come in bold colors, so if you can carry them off, go crazy!
A perennial fave for footwear is TOD’S. The shoes are so comfortable, you want to wear them all the time.
At the end of the day, you have to love what you wear, and always remember to have fun with fashion!
